Facts about Ezra Levant and Western Standard magazine

Western Standard publisher Ezra Levant is in the spotlight for publishing cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad in his magazine. Here are some facts:

- Calgary Sun and Winnipeg Sun columnist
- Lawyer
- Worked for the Fraser Institute
- Served as legislative assistant to Reform party leader Preston Manning
- Was on the editorial board of the National Post
- Served as communications director for then-Canadian Alliance leader (and now Public Security Minister) Stockwell Day
- Declared himself to be a "Stockoholic"
- Threatened to sue dissident Alliance MP Chuck Strahl for publicly alleging that there was "dishonest communication" from the leader's office
- Resigned thereafter
- Was nominated as Canadian Alliance candidate for the riding of Calgary-Southwest in 2002
- Stepped aside so new party leader (now Prime Minister) Stephen Harper could run in the riding
- Magazine launched in March 2004
- Gave out buttons calling the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms "stupid"

(From the Western Standard)

Interesting points:

- Levant is mocking the Canadian Islamic Congress's threat to sue
- In defending himself, Levant keeps citing the Charter

Ezra Levant is a conservative troublemaker. He's the publisher of the Western Standard, appears each week on TV's Global Sunday, is a columnist at the Calgary Sun and Winnipeg Sun newspapers, and is heard weekly on the Western Standard Radio Show, broadcast throughout most of Alberta. Ezra's last book, Fight Kyoto, was a national best-seller.
Ezra spent 10 years as a volunteer and professional with the Reform and Canadian Alliance parties, including serving as a senior Parliamentary assistant to leaders Preston Manning and Stockwell Day.

Hey - the Charter of Rights and Freedoms is Stupid. Can't blame him for telling the truth on buttons.
And last I heard, having an opinion and expressing it, being involved in any political organization you wish is protected by the stupid Charter.

Show your support for free speech…buy a copy of the Western Standard!

If we let the Muslims control what we publish they in effect become our editors. Is this what we want? Do we want those, to put it crudely, "crazies" to start telling us what we can and can't say? If we let them get away with this then who will be the editor next time…the Jews …the fundamental Christians…the Gays…the police (not that there is anything wrong with any of these groups)?

I vote no. Like the line in the Eagles song says...tell them … "get over it". After all we aren’t really doing anything to them. If they don’t like something then don’t read it. That’s what I do. Let them adjust to the western standard rather than the other way around. It is a slippery slope to let a religious group control us through fear.

In time, if the Muslims are subjected to this sort of thing long enough they will start to accept it as “normal”. Change takes time and old habits can't be thrown out of the upstairs window. They must be coached down the stairs one step at a time.

Canadian soldiers are paid to risk their lives to protect our freedom and this includes freedom of speech. Give em hell boys!

Hi Anonymous

Thank you for your post.It reeks of ignorance and intolerance. You have effectively exposed your insecurities and weaknesses.

If you would take the time to open-mindedly educate yourself regarding that which you mock you might be surprized to discover why Muslims will never and can never accept religious intolerance, disrespect and blasphemous cartoons as “normal”, and why we will never be coached down the stairs "one step at a time"...

Sorry , you will have walk down the steps of ignorance yourself mate - It's time you 'get over it' and shake loose from the chains of hate that bog you down.

While freedom of speech is important, each and every person is entitled to religious freedom and freedom to have their religious values protected.

Don't use free speech as a scapegoat to ridicule faith.Be responsible...

I pray that you 'get over' your Islamaphobia soon. If you would like to know more about Islam and what it REALLY is let me know. For now your treatment should be to just discard all programed false steoreotypes and lies about Islam.

Regards

I think we all know what Islam is all about...

As an agnostic, I find this all very funny. Honestly, I think Islam is spreading like the plague. I think we should do everything in our power to stop the spread of this barbaric religion. The majority of Muslims are hardcore fanatics and this is not the case with jews and christians. The only thing Muslims care about is their faith and living their lives like bloody religious zombies. This is why they live in poverty and chaos (no it is not because of israel or the America). Do you honestly believe people care about the feelings of Muslims? PUhlease, they are just scared of the Muslims (they tend to be violent).

anonymous you say,

"I think we all know what Islam is all about..."

I don't think you know what Islam is about at all ...I again make an open invitation to all to Discover Islam for yourself, if you don't you will just be like the guy who, due to his ignorance, fought and argued that the bus was actually a plane. His ignorance doesn't change the truth - a bus will never be a plane. It's each person's moral responsibilty that he/she educates himself/herself before making rash and harsh statements that are most likely incorrect.

"The only thing Muslims care about is their faith and living their lives like bloody religious zombies."

I certainly don't admire your tolerance, I hope this isn't the values you uphold as an agnostic.

I am a Muslim and I live my life according to the Will of My Creator - God. So do practising followers of all religions. It's only logical and rational.

"Honestly, I think Islam is spreading like the plague. "

My challenge to you - find out why Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world

"PUhlease, they are just scared of the Muslims (they tend to be violent). "

Thank you salma. your comments do really stand up for what you are, for justice, and really stoping any intolerance and arrogant speeches. I emphasise the fact for the poeple who have biased opinions about things to do research and educate themselve before being humilated and subject themselves to arrogance and racist.
